Urban Cowboy, the 1980 hit movie starring John
Travolta and Debra Winger, made a household
name of Gilley's, a sprawling dance bar in Houston,
TX and its signature mechanical bull. Now Urban
Cowboy comes to the road as a Broadway musical.
Featuring world famous songs such as "Could
I Have This Dance for the Rest of My Life"
and "Lookin' for Love In All The Wrong
Places", Urban Cowboy: The Musical is the
story of Bud, a new breed of cowboy who's turning
heads and looking for love in the biggest honky-tonk
in the world. His whirlwind romance and marriage
to Sissy and the subsequent troubles these young
newlyweds encounter are played out against a
gritty landscape of oilfields, trailer parks
and a sawdust covered dance floor where nights
come alive in a sea of booze, brawls, babes
and a foot stomping band.
Audiences were heard hootin' and hollerin' at
the Broadhurst Theater in New York in 2003 to
music that was nominated for a Tony Award for
Best Original Score. The New York Post described
Tony nominated Melinda Roy's choreography as
"inventively boisterous and bouncy".
A New York City Ballet ballerina who started
a country and western dance troupe, Melinda
created choreography that was also praised as
"splendid", "snappy", "highly
exuberant" and "compulsively watchable".
"Kids strut, shake, slide, glide and two
step their way around (in a style) that is never
tame". Urban Cowboy: The Musical is a rousing,
high-energy rodeo of a show that dances up a
storm.
