As a member of Solas for four and a half years,
Karan Casey recieved critical acclaim from Japan
to america as one of Ireland's great singers
. Now, well into her solo career, she has established
herself as, in the words of The Wall Street
Journal, "One of the true glories of Irish
music today", a standing confirmed by having
been twice voted Best Female Traditional/Folk
artist by Irish Music Magazine readers and her
nomination for a prestigious BBC Radio 2 Folk
Award.
Karan has learned from avariety of musical sources,
starting with a church choir and local mentors
Lupeta Sheenan and the Foran Family in her own
parish Ballyduff Lower. After moving to Dublin
for university studies in Italian and Classics,
she also trained in piano and voice at the Irish
School of Music and the Royal Irish Academy
of Music. In 1993, Karan emigrated to New York
and pursued a jazz degree at Brooklyn's Long
Island University. After making the rounds of
the sessions in New York, she joined Seamus
Egan, Winifrad Horan, John Doyle and John Williams
to form the highly acclaimed group Solas. The
band recorded three albums in four years and
won NAIRD awards for each. They played with
Bela Fleck, Iris DeMent, Jerry Douglas, Donal
Lunny, and the Cheiftains, while touring extensively
in America, Europe and japan.
Four albums into her solo career, Karan continues
to explore the boundaries of Irish song. Fully
versed in the genre's subtleties (and comfortable
singing in Gaelic), she is equally is equally
at home transforming Billie Holidays jazz classic
"Strange Fruit" into a chilling ballad
from beyond the Pale or applying Billy Bragg's
"Distant Shore" to the plight of modern
day African refugeees in Ireland.
Karan Casey Band has already performed at many
pretigious venues, including the Kennedy Center,
WOMAD USA, A Prairie Home Companion, Mountain
Stage, Philadelphia Folk Festival, Strawberry
Music Festival (with Tim O'Brien's Crossing),
Symphony Space, Knitting Factory, Kentucky Center
for the Arts, Hollywood Bowl, and (participating
in Paul Winter's solstice Celebrations) the
Cathedral of John the Divine.
